Indonesians Stage Solidarity Performances for Japan

BANDA ACEH, KOMPAS.com - A number of Aceh senior artists held a variety of art performances in Banda Aceh on Sunday night to express condolences over the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, a member of the organizing committee, Fikar W Eda said here Monday.

"This activity is not planned before, but this is a manifestation of the artists who are sorry about the disaster that hit Japan," Fikar added. The event was also held to the Tangse people, Pidie district, Aceh province, who suffered from massive flooding which occurred several days ago.

The expression of sympathy was reflected in the various lyrics of poems, ratoh (Aceh poem) and Simeulu-language songs, which told the magnitude of the wave that came and hit the human life, and became a living experience for the people in Simeulu islands, Aceh.

"Simeulue is the only area which has local wisdom and learning about tsunami for its people, so that when tsunami hit Aceh in 2004, almost no victim was found," Yoppi Simeulu, an artist from Simeulu district noted. The artists also called on the world to unite, assist and support the Japanese which was expected to reawaken from the grievances like Aceh had did.

"May God Almighty protect those who fall victims of the disaster and hopefully the number of victims is not increasing rapidly," said Fikar W Eda who is also a senior artist in Aceh.

Meanwhile, an Aceh community leader, Ahmad Farhan Hamid, expected the action of this sympathetic art performances can provide moral supports for the Japanese, though only by a variety of poems.

"Hopefully, later on a few Acehnese artists can visit Japan and display various art activities to entertain as well as reviving the spirit of the people in the country," Farhan said.

Manchester United Set To Offer Chicharito Five-Year Deal As Real Madrid Target Striker

Javier Hernandez is in advanced talks with Manchester United about signing a new contract, Goal.com UK can reveal. The Premier League leaders are ready to reward ‘Chicharito’ with an improved five-year deal that will tie him to the club until 2016.
Hernandez is expected to negotiate a considerable hike on his current salary, which is believed to be worth around £40,000-a-week, and put pen to paper by the end of the season.
There has been interest in the striker from Real Madrid, triggered by Karim Benzema's slump in form earlier in the season plus the long-term injury to Gonzalo Higuain, and Jose Mourinho is known to be a big admirer.
His current agreement was due to be reviewed at the end of his debut season, although interest from the Spanish giants has led United to move faster and protect their investment.
Hernandez has an impressive strike-rate at Old Trafford since his switch from Mexican club Chivas last summer for an initial fee of around £8 million.

Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake

A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake.
The quake has sparked fires in several areas including Tokyo, with at least 15 people reported dead.
It struck about 250 miles (400km) from the capital at a depth of 20 miles. There have been powerful aftershocks.
The tremor hit at 1446 local time (0546 GMT). Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years.

A tsunami warning was extended across the Pacific to include the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hawaii, the Pacific coast of Russia and North and South America.

Strong waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, officials said, damaging dozens of coastal communities. Kyodo news agency said a 10-metre wave (33ft) struck the port of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture.
Japan's NHK television showed a massive surge of debris-filled water sweeping away buildings, cars and ships and reaching far inland.
Motorists could be seen trying to speed away from the wall of water.
Farmland around Sendai was submerged and the waves pushed cars across the runway of the city's airport.
Kyodo said at least 15 people had been killed in the earthquake and tsunami. It was believed the death toll could rise significantly.
Seasick'

The earthquake also triggered a number of fires, including one at an oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, engulfing storage tanks.

There were reports of about 20 people injured in Tokyo after the roof of a hall collapsed on to a graduation ceremony.
Residents and workers in Tokyo rushed out of apartment buildings and office blocks and gathered in parks and open spaces as aftershocks continued to hit.
Many people in Tokyo said they had never felt such a powerful earthquake.
In central Tokyo, Jeffrey Balanag said he was stuck in his office in the Shiodome Sumitomo building because the elevators had stopped working.
"There's no panic but we're almost seasick from the constant rolling of the building," he told the BBC.

Bullet train services to northern Japan were halted, rapid transit in Tokyo was suspended and some nuclear power plants automatically shut down.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said there had been no radiation leaks.
In a televised address, he extended his sympathy to the victims of the disaster and said an emergency response headquarters had been set up.

FIFA Rejects The nomination of Nurdin Halid

FIFA asks Nurdin Halid to no longer propose him self as the candidate of the next PSSI chairman election.
This was revealed in a reply letter from FIFA to PSSI on Monday (2/28/2011). In the letter, FIFA declared for Nurdin is no longer a candidate for the chairman of the next period.
"There are two important points in the letter provided by FIFA. The first is their decision not to grant sanction to the Indonesian football," said Commissioner of Persebaya 1927, Saleh Mukadar, as cited by World Soccer.
"The second, not approved Nurdin Halid as a candidate for PSSI Chairman on the coming period," added the former national football Rescue Committee Secretary (KPPN).
According to Saleh, the letter was first checked and declared officially. "The letter was directly sent from Switzerland (headquarters of FIFA). Previously, Nurdin only describes the first point. He did not disclose the second point that is written in a letter sent by FIFA," said Saleh.
The letter that was submitted by PSSI to FIFA on 28 February has two resolutions, the PSSI congress delayed the implementation of the plan was held on March 26, 2011 and request that FIFA did not impose sanctions on Indonesia.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Andi Mallarangeng said he would call a board PSSI. According to him, if it is done, then the government would be intervening PSSI.
As reported earlier, PSSI chairman Nurdin Halid said so far has not made any communication with Andi Mallarengeng. And this needs to be done to resolve the issue of Indonesian national football uncertain at this time.
